ART PRO VLA III Overview For more than two decades, the Pro VLA compressor has been one of ART’s most popular products. It’s a hidden weapon. A cult classic. The Rochester sound. The original was rated “one of the best compressors ever made at its price point” by Tape Op, and we’ve carried on that legacy with the new Pro VLA III. It is an optical compressor with two channels that may be used separately or in stereo, like with previous generations. It provides musical control over dynamics, which may smooth out individual tracks or bind a whole mix together. It features a fixed-input, variable-threshold architecture and has the original nature of a genuine 12AT7 tube. The Voice switch is new in this edition and allows you to choose between a warm tube or a clean solid-state signal route to match your source material. The ratio range has been expanded to 1.25:1, allowing for even more nuanced control when light compression is required for mastering applications. We boosted available headroom, reduced background noise, and improved channel symmetry in linked stereo mode. The front panel has also been updated to reflect the Pro Channel III. The Pro VLA III additionally has variable threshold, attack, release, and output controls, independent bypass per channel, and simultaneous metering of input, output, and gain reduction. The back panel features balanced XLR and 1/4″ inputs and outputs, as well as a button for switching between 4 dBu and -10 dBV operation.
