Slate Digital VMS ML-1A Overview The Slate Digital VMS ML-1A is a large-diaphragm, cardioid condenser microphone intended for use with the Virtual Microphone System (VMS). VMS is a hybrid system that combines the ultra-transparent ML-1A microphone with the cutting-edge VMS modeling plug-in, providing recording enthusiasts and pros with the sound palette of a world-class microphone locker. Using digital modeling, users may rapidly swap between the sound characteristics of renowned tube microphones, old dynamic mics, current condensers, and even historical preamps—all within the program. This versatility not only speeds up the recording process but also allows engineers and artists to test multiple mic sounds in real time. Even more impressively, microphone models may be changed after recording, providing unrivaled flexibility and creative freedom throughout the mixing process. Hardware & Design The ML-1A has a cardioid polar pattern and a 1-inch capsule, providing a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. With an output impedance of 50 ohms, a sensitivity of -32.5 dB, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 86 dB, it captures sound with accuracy and fidelity. Designed for studio use, it runs on phantom power and has a three-position pad switch (0 dB, -10 dB, -20 dB), allowing it to manage sound pressure levels of up to 145 dB. Its physical structure is a black and gray 200 mm by 50 mm cylindrical chassis weighing 450 grams, with a re-engineered grille for both design and function. Virtual Microphone System The ML-1A works with Slate Digital’s new Virtual Microphone System plugin, which combines a simplified array of microphone models into a unified software environment. This VMS plugin has complex features such as microphone model morphing, which allows users to combine the sound characteristics of two different microphone emulations. A proximity slider provides for precise control over the natural low-end boost that happens when a microphone is placed close to a source, while a low-frequency roll-off selection prevents unwanted rumbling. Additionally, the mono-to-stereo widener enhances the spatial quality of background singers and other stereo components.
